The Canadian Security Association (CANASA) recognizes the importance of a post-secondary education to both the security industry and to society in general. CANASA understands that tuition fees can sometimes be a financial burden, which is why the Scholarship Program was created.
The goal of the Scholarship Program is to benefit students and members who wish to fund their education and careers in the security industry in Canada.
Fourteen (14) $1,000 scholarships are available. Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria.
Eligibility and Criteria Options (contact scholarship@canasa.org with any questions)
- The Scholarship Program is open to the dependents of individuals that are employees of a CANASA member at the time of application
- Applicants must either:
- meet all admission requirements for the College, University, or post-secondary institution, or
- be enrolled in a post-secondary programming and working towards obtaining a degree, diploma, or certification at any University, College, or post-secondary institution.
- The Scholarship Program is also open to those members who are working and continuing their education.
- Applicants must be registered for a recognized course which is longer than 1 week in duration, and must provide a letter of registration;
- Applicants must submit a letter of approval to take the course signed by their supervisor. The letter must also confirm that the applicant’s company is not covering the cost of the course and;
- As some courses may be less than the scholarship amount, only the cost of the course will be covered..
- Scholarships are also available to students enrolled in approved security programs at schools in the provinces of British Columbia, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
- One scholarship awarded per province to students enrolled in approved security programs at schools in the provinces of British Columbia, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Here are the specific criteria for these scholarships:
For BCIT Students:
The Scholarship Program is open to all students enrolled in or who have received acceptance to the Security Systems Technician (certificate program) at BCIT. Students must be active participants in the program between the dates of December 1, 2021 and April 1, 2022.
For NB Students:
New Brunswick Community College (NBCC), which offers two programs directly related to the Security Industry: Cybersecurity and Network Administration – students from both programs will be competing against each other. Students’ program start date must be no later than December 1, 2021. Students’ program completion date must be no earlier than December 30, 2022.
For NSCC Students:
The Scholarship Program is open to all students enrolled in Electronic Engineering Technician program at Nova Scotia Community College in 2022 who have selected residential electronic as their speciality. Students’ program start date must be no later than December 1, 2021. Students’ program completion date must be no earlier than December 30, 2022.
For QC Students:
The Scholarship Program reserved exclusively for students enrolled in the Security Systems Installation and Maintenance program is open to students enrolled in 2022. Students’ program end date must be no later than December 30, 2022.
Written Submission*
Scholarship Essay and Questions Options:
Objective:
The intent behind this evaluation is to determine if the applicant has a genuine interest in the Security Industry and has spent time understanding the various segments, drivers, technologies, regulations, roles and innovations. We are not looking for expertly copied Internet definitions and industry overviews but trying to develop new industry and CANASA members, putting member fees and donations to good use to promote the industry and trade. We are not looking for journalist or author skills nor for expert security technologists. We are looking for candidates that help drive the future of this industry with passion.
CANASA Introduction to Essay and Test:
A one or two paragraph overview of the Security Industry and CANASA’s role should be a preface to the essay and test. It should be a motivating piece for those considering a new career, talking to the wide range of professional roles from Technicians, Installers, Operators, Project Managers, Sales Professionals, Admin, Intercoms, Video Surveillance, Access Control, Visitor Management, IOT solutions, Cloud, Integration, Automation, Controls field, Cyber Security and interaction with Loss Prevent ion, Emergency Responders and Risk Analysis Professionals. It is a skilled trade that helps develop a broad range of disciplines and knowledge in areas as electrical, electronics, networking, codes & standards, blueprint reading, project management, team skills, leadership, communications and customer service.
Option A:
Essay Content: Choose a topic from below and write a 500 – 1000 word essay
- Describe some of the areas of Technology and how they help mitigate risk and help business drive an ROI (return for Investment) and/or solve common problems.
- Define what important roles electronic security systems play in preventing property loss and saving lives.
- Write about the prerequisite skills and where such knowledge can be obtained in the journey of becoming an electronic security professional.
- Talk about how standards, codes, Alarm Bylaws and Provincial legislation may help regulate the industry for following best practices and compliance.
- Speak to how you see the industry having evolved over the last 25 years, what some of the current trends and innovations are in terms of technology and interoperability and where you see the security industry going in the near future.
Option B:
Open Ended Questions: Provide a Response to each question
- Name the key Security Technology for controlling entry and egress through doors and the key components that such a system would deploy.
- Provide an insight into the key components of an alarm system in terms of system brain, user interface, detection, sounders and communications.
- What do you believe to be the some of the emerging technologies to be impacting the Security Industry and what benefits and functionality come from integrating them with each other?
- What post-secondary education programs are available in Canada that would be valuable for someone wanting to have a career in the Security Industry?
- What is a smart home alarm? Explain some of the devices typically used and the benefits.
- What is CANASA and what role does it play in the Security Industry in Canada?
Application Process
Applications and written submissions may be submitted until March 31, 2022. Submissions must include:
- Completed application (No late or incomplete applications will be accepted)
- Written academic paper (option A) or responses to all six open ended questions (option B)
- Official school transcripts (must show last two years, student applicants only)
- If a high school student, proof of acceptance into a post-secondary institution
- A letter of recommendation (from teacher, colleague or employer) – should include details about their relationship to the applicant, the length of time they have known them, and a strong case for why the program they wish to pursue is the best way for them to achieve their career goals.

Rules
- Funds will be paid directly to the winner.
- Submissions will be disqualified if all documentation is not provided, by the deadline.
- Dependents of Scholarship Selection Committee members are not eligible for the program.
- If a region does not receive any submissions, no scholarship will be awarded for that region.
- Applicants may be attending or be intending to attend a school outside of Canada.
- Applications will be accepted from previous winners. However, past winners are only eligible if they are the only applicant in their corresponding region.
- For the purposes of this program, a “dependent” refers to a student for whom a member is the legal guardian.
- Should a region not award a winner, those scholarship funds will be divided among the winners from the other regions. For example, if there are 10 out of the 14 possible scholarship winners across Canada, the winners will split the $14,000 CDN of scholarship funds available with each receiving $1,400 CDN.
Submission Process
The Scholarship Selection Committee will be comprised of a representative from CANASA Regional Councils across Canada. The Committee will review applications, grade written submissions and select up to 14 scholarship recipients per year. Awardees will be announced on April 20, 2022. CANASA can award one scholarship in each region as indicated by the boundaries below. If a region does not receive any submissions, no scholarship will be awarded for that region.
