Responsibilities

The Executive Director is the University’s leader and expert on campus safety and security and is responsible for setting the department’s direction, ensuring that the department's resources are strategically deployed to support a safe campus environment and to ensure the security of the University's assets.

  • Leads the UBC Campus Security strategic planning process, in alignment with the UBC Strategic Plan, and develops short and long-range goals and objectives for the department including organizational change and future projects.
  • Identifies, develops and implements proactive crime prevention plans and programs to support overall safety and crime reduction on campus.
  • Using a community-based security model, plans, develops and directs the overall approach to the deployment of security services on campus.
  • Develops and implements a risk assessment protocol for campus facilities that can be used to establish resource needs.
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with the RCMP and emergency service providers.
  • Establishes and monitors customer service standards in the department.
  • Plans, develops and prepares the Annual Budget and Business Submission and other reports for senior administration of the University. Oversees and monitors the department's $5 million budget on an ongoing basis.
  Qualifications
  • Masters degree in criminology or a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a senior executive with responsibility for security operations, preferably within a large university or municipal environment.
  • Expert knowledge on policing and security issues; seen as a credible expert in the field.
  • Deep experience in the higher education environment, including an understanding of the complexities and the constituents, and a proven ability to work in partnership with academics and students to integrate safety and security measures within those realms.
  • An innovative administrator capable of inspiring a vision who has successfully led significant change.
  • Demonstrated skill in shaping, initiating, and implementing strategies in a complex environment.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a multi-stakeholder organization and build alignment among varied entities.
  • Proven success in building partnerships within a community and taking a proactive approach with a wide variety of interested and diverse community stakeholders.
  • Well-honed sense of community, and the proven ability to speak to different audiences about complex, and sometimes sensitive issues.
  • Proven sensibility and appreciation of the role that gender, race, disability, gender identity, sexuality, social background, etc. play in the experience of safety in a university setting.
  • Experience in building a successful, inclusive work team, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Experienced, adept and professional in media relations and interactions with print and electronic media. Has been trained in working with the media.
