Important Notice:
10-digit dialing for local calls in the 705 region
Starting January 15, 2011, residents of Ontario in the 705 area code will be required to dial 10-digits – the area code followed by the 7-digit phone number – for all local calls. The introduction of 10-digit dialing is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and will pave the way for the addition of a new area code, 249, in March 2011, as the 705 area code reaches capacity.
To comply with 10-digit local dialing, some automated dialing systems, including alarm systems, must be reprogrammed to include the area code. It is important to ensure that the necessary reprogramming be completed before 10-digit local dialing comes into effect on January 15, 2011. After this date, a recorded message will be heard each time a call is dialed using 7 digits. This message could interrupt the transmission of data such as alarm signals.
It is therefore critically important that any security services that utilize the telephone network are modified to accommodate 10-digit local dialing by January 15, 2011.
To ensure a seamless transition to 10-digit local dialing, the Telecommunications Alliance – a grouping of major telecommunications companies – is spearheading an information campaign aimed at business and residential customers, encouraging them to start making the necessary changes right away.

Area Code 204 and 705 are Running Out of Telephone Numbers
The Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA) has declared a jeopardy condition in the 204 (Manitoba) and 705 (Northern Ontario) telephone area codes.
