Key Responsibilities

  • Install and configure:
    • Intrusion alarm systems
    • Access control systems
    • Video surveillance (CCTV)
  • Install and terminate wiring per electrical and safety codes
  • Mount and program system hardware and devices
  • Perform system testing and commissioning
  • Document installation reports and equipment used
  • Explain system use and maintenance to clients
  • Coordinate with project teams to meet deadlines and specs

Qualifications

  • 1–2 years of hands-on installation experience OR technical diploma
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams
  • Comfort with hand tools, ladders, and confined spaces
  • Familiarity with computer-based systems and mobile apps
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong communication and time management skills.

Licensing Notice - Quebec & British Columbia

Québec Requirements

To work as a Security Installation or Service Technician in Québec, the following certifications and permits are mandatory:

  • Hold a DEP 5296 – Installation and Maintenance of Security Systems, a vocational diploma recognized by the Québec Ministry of Education.
  • Possess a valid Security Agent Licence issued by the Bureau de la sécurité privée (BSP), required for anyone working in the electronic security field.
  • Hold a valid CCQ Competency Card under the trade classification “Electrician – Security Systems Installation Specialist” (Électricien – spécialisé en installation de systèmes de sécurité) if performing work on construction sites. This designation is mandatory for electrical work in Québec's construction industry.
  • Licence is not required if working for the residential market.

British Columbia Requirements

To work as an installation or service technician in the electronic security field in British Columbia, the following legal requirements apply:

  1. Complete Basic Security Training (BST) through the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) or an approved school.
  2. Obtain a Security Worker Licence issued by the Ministry of Public Safety of British Columbia.
  3. To obtain a full Security Alarm Installer licence, you must hold a Trades Qualification (TQ) Certificate under the SkilledTradesBC Act.

In addition, installers must hold a Class C-R Certificate of Qualification for security alarm systems, issued by Technical Safety BC.
