 Position Purpose

As Chief Law Enforcement Officer for the University, the incumbent is responsible for the planning, development, delivery and management of a responsible, safe and secure campus environment for staff, students, faculty and visitors to campus. Responsible for developing a vision and strategic plan, in keeping with Destination 2020 and the University’s Master Plan, as well as initiatives and strategies for Protection Services to promote awareness of University protection programs and services both on campus and in the community. Ensures protection, safety and security for all campus users, oversees the financial, human and physical resources associated with 24-hour, 365 day security programs and operations, emergency response and preparedness teams, investigation services, parking facilities and operations, and sustainable transportation.

Essential Qualifications

Post-secondary degree in Criminology, Business, Public Administration or other related field or the equivalent combination of training and experience in a Protection and Security environment;

Minimum of 10 years of proven experience in security operations management, preferably in a university or post-secondary education environment.

Minimum of 10 years of proven management and supervisory skills in a complex environment.

Sound knowledge of the fields of security, crime prevention and criminal investigation, normally acquired through a University degree of college diploma in law and security or equivalent.

Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the development and implementation of organization-wide policies and strategies related to the responsibilities of the position.

Comprehensive knowledge and experience in long-range planning and budget management. Project management experience.

Sound knowledge and experience in Emergency Measures Management and Emergency Preparedness. Leadership and motivational skills.

Ability to act and think strategically.

Proven ability to work in a stressful environment and to deal effectively with distressed individuals in confrontational situations; ability to maintain composure while assessing status of incidences and implementing appropriate measures. Ability to negotiate agreements with a wide range of stakeholders and client groups.

Proven ability to influence and gain the support of senior management with regard to key strategies.

Proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to adhere to strict confidentiality.

Excellent interpersonal relations skills in dealing with a multicultural, pluralistic community.

Bilingualism (spoken and written) in French and English
