 Description

First Nations’ Emergency Services Society of British Columbia (FNESS) is a charitable non-profit organization incorporated under the Society Act of British Columbia. With the support of the First Nation Leadership Council, FNESS is the organization that communities reach out to for support and delivery of essential emergency and forest fuel management programs and services. FNESS evolved from the Society of Native Indian Fire Fighters of BC (SNIFF), which was established in 1986. SNIFF’s initial objectives were to help reduce the number of fire-related deaths on First Nation reserves but changed its emphasis to incorporate a greater spectrum of emergency services. In 1994, SNIFF changed its name to First Nations’ Emergency Services Society of BC to reflect its growing diversity of services provided.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will play a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s commitment to supporting and delivering essential emergency management programs and services for First Nations communities. This leadership position involves not only guiding and supporting the Board of Directors but also strategically expanding FNESS’s reach beyond its head office to all corners of the province, ensuring the organization’s capacity to comprehensively serve First Nations communities. With oversight of a budget totaling $36M and 77 full-time staff, the CEO oversees planning, human resources, operating programs, financial management, administration, community relations, and committees in alignment with FNESS’s Mission Statement and Guiding Principles. This includes ensuring that all policies, procedures, and activities—both operating and financial—meet Board specifications, approved funding, budgets, and legislative requirements.

The ideal candidate is a dynamic and visionary leader deeply committed to advancing emergency management programs and services for First Nations communities. With a proven track record in emergency management or related community services, this individual will possess empathy and understanding of the unique challenges faced by First Nations communities. This understanding is underpinned by strong strategic leadership, political acumen, and administrative capabilities. As a collaborative and empowering leader, the CEO will build high-performing teams through encouraging growth and fostering a positive and inclusive work culture. Crucially, the ideal CEO will showcase years of success in establishing and nurturing partnerships with external agencies and diverse partners, recognizing the significance of forging strong relationships in achieving FNESS’s mission.

The targeted salary range for this position is $150,000 – $190,000 annually, supplemented by a competitive total rewards package.
